The most effective way to motivate people to vote is through personal connection. Outside of knocking on doors, phone calls are the most effective voter outreach we can do to ensure the Democrats get back in charge.

Phone banking provides us in California an opportunity to make crucial personal connections with voters in the elections in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Phone calls by real people can increase turnout by approximately 2 to 3%, and our calls "clean" voter lists enabling our campaigns to be far more effective.

The margin of victory in state legislative races can be tiny. In 2017, one of our Virginia candidates, Cheryl Turpin, won by less than 400 votes. We had over 1,600 conversations with voters during our phone banks in 2018.

And phone banking is not hard - our candidates provide a script and phone numbers for almost entirely Democrat voters.  It's true that most calls don't get answered, but those that do usually find someone who is at least polite and, not infrequently, interested to learn about a candidate they never have heard of.  It is so gratifying to leave a phone bank having spoken to actual voters thousands of miles away who hadn't known about our candidate and now do and plan to vote for her.
